Public buildings consume energy around the clock. Heating, lighting and ventilation follow schedules that rarely match how the rooms are actually used. Losses accumulate quietly — a system left running in an empty wing, a fault nobody reports, a setting nobody revisits after the season changes. Because the building is operated by an institution rather than by the people inside it, there is usually no one watching the meter at the moment a loss begins.

The gap this patent addresses sits between noticing a loss and doing something about it. Much of the existing practice in building energy management stops at measurement: a monthly report, a dashboard someone opens occasionally, a figure discussed after the fact. Measurement is necessary, but on its own it does not close anything, switch anything off, or shorten the period during which energy is being wasted.

A system that shortens the interval between a loss starting and a loss being addressed works on that existing stock.

In a public building, the person best placed to notice a problem is often not the person responsible for the energy bill, and the person responsible for the bill is often not present.
